Stuff White People Like

I know that I have not blogged in forever! I have so much to catch up on and I plan on doing that soon! This semester I started the Elementary Program at BYU. I love all of my classes and I am discovering that I truly love teaching and I am receiving a confirmation that it is what I am supposed to do for a career.

So for my Foundations of Multicultural Education class I had to go to this website called stuff white people like and choose one of the articles that I felt like I connected with! I chose an article called picking their own fruit. In the article it talks about how white people want to move out to country and have their own gardens and harvest their own crops but they don't want to do all f the work that is involved.

For my class I have to write a review on the comments that I get for this post so if you can take a few minutes to read the short article and write a comment of your thoughts on the article that would be great! Thank you!

Here are some questions to guide your comments:
Do you think that this a accurate interpretation of white people?
Is it uncomfortable for you to read negative comments or opinions of white people?
Have you ever fallen subject of this stereotype?

Thanks again!

Have a great day! Stay tuned for an amazing catch up post!

  1. I thought that the article gave an interesting viewpoint on the slavery angle that I have not really heard used before. It was indeed thought-provoking, but definitely provocative as well. I found it offensive in that broad generalizations about peoples' work ethics very rarely are justified, especially when based on something trivial such as color.

I do not mind at all reading negative comments about white people, as long as they are justified. I hope I can honestly say that I would be just as offended if I read such a piece, but pertaining to the lack of work ethic of black people.

I particularly found the phrase, "In other words, berry picking is the agricultural equivalent to a private liberal arts college. It’s no surprise white people like it, because much like a liberal arts degree it feels like you’ve done real work when you really haven’t." This is a very harsh and frankly inaccurate statement. The author of the article is blanketing all white people who berry pick as lazy and doing it purely for their enjoyment, an idea which is just as ridiculous as saying that when gaining a liberal arts degree one has not really accomplished anything.
